Rome vacation costs: stay, eat, get around (2026)
Rome is a walking city until you sit down. The money goes to a Piazza Navona table, a golf-cart tour, and a second ruin ticket you tried to squeeze in before lunch.
Start here Sleep in Trastevere, or in Prati near Ottaviano if the Vatican is the day you care about. Cornetto and coffee standing at the bar. Give the Colosseum and Forum their own day.

Getting around
Trastevere to the Pantheon is a walk. Metro A to Ottaviano is the Vatican. A taxi on Via del Corso at noon is stuck traffic with a meter.
You usually don’t need a car.
Transit-first
- Walk Trastevere, the Pantheon neighborhood, and Testaccio. Pack light; stairs are the elevator
- Metro A/B for Vatican and Termini hops. A 48- or 72-hour pass if you will ride
- FCO via Leonardo Express to Termini if you land late — then own that neighborhood or move in the morning
Where to stay
A Trastevere guesthouse or Hotel Nazionale in the center. The Beehive if you land late at Termini. Hotel de Russie or Hotel Eden when the room is the Splurge.
Budget
- The Beehive Termini, a smaller room, often about €80–140 a night. Trains are downstairs.
- Hotel Alimandi near the Vatican, often about €100–160. Metro A to Ottaviano is the morning.
- Ibis Styles Roma Vintage often about €110–170, pack light, stairs are common.
- Best Western Plus Hotel Universo Termini, often about €120–180. Louder nights, lower rate.
Mid-range
- Hotel Santa Maria a Trastevere courtyard, often about €180–280 a night. You walk to dinner.
- Hotel Indigo Rome – St. George centro, often about €200–320. The walk is the transit plan.
- Hotel Nazionale Piazza Navona and Pantheon area, often about €190–300.
- NH Collection Roma Palazzo Cinquecento Termini-adjacent, often about €170–280, if you arrive late.
Splurge
- Palazzo Manfredi you are paying for the Colosseum view, often €400 and up, not for a shorter walk.
- Hotel de Russie Piazza del Popolo, often €500 and up. The bar breakfast is the Splurge morning.
- Hassler Roma above the Spanish Steps, often €600 and up.
- The St. Regis Rome often €500 and up. The city fee still sits on top, a few euros a person.

Where to eat
Cornetto standing at the bar. Da Enzo al 29 or Flavio al Velavevodetto for the meal, and ask about the cover charge (coperto). La Pergola is one tasting menu, not a nightly habit.

- A cornetto and a coffee at the bar, standing often about €2–4. Seated on a piazza it can be €8–12 for the same pastry.
- Trapizzino in Testaccio stuffed pizza bread, often about €5–7.
- Pizza al taglio often about €5–8 a piece, in Testaccio or Trastevere.
- A market lunch often about €8–14. Not a photo menu on a square.
Mid-range
- A trattoria menu often about €25–40 a person, away from Piazza Navona.
- A Roscioli-adjacent table often about €40–70 a person. One reservation.
- Supplì or pizza the next day about €5–8 — so the reservation stays singular.
- Coperto is often €1–3 a person. Ask before the bread lands.
Splurge
- Armando al Pantheon often about €50–80 a person, and only if the table exists. The door is not a plan.
- La Pergola a tasting that often runs €200 and up. One night.
- Hotel de Russie breakfast often €30 and up. The bar on the walk is €3.
- A Piazza Navona seated dinner a pasta that is €12 two streets away can be €20 or more for the view.
Things to do
Pantheon and Trastevere on foot. Pay for the Colosseum and Forum as one timed ticket, or the Vatican Museums, not both before lunch. Skip the golf-cart.
Budget
- The Pantheon about €5. The square outside is free, and it is not a dinner reservation.
- A Trastevere-to-centro walk €0 in fares.
- A 100-minute Metro ticket about €1.50, if you are not walking.
- The park at Villa Borghese, outside the gallery €0.
Mid-range
- Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine €18 plus a €2 booking fee for the standard ticket. One morning.
- Vatican Museums €20 at the door, €25 if you book online. A different day.
- Borghese Gallery timed, about €18 with the booking fee. It sells out separately.
- A 48-hour Metro pass is about €12.50. It does not get you into the ruins.
Splurge
- A Full Experience Colosseum ticket about €22–24 plus €2 — if you want the arena or the underground. A guide fee may be extra.
- A golf-cart tour often about €40–80 a person — for streets you can walk.
- An open-top bus often about €25–35 — the same mistake.
- August in the centro hotel rates jump, and some kitchens close. The street in front of the Pantheon is still about €5 to enter.
Mid-range money walkthrough
Two adults, four nights in Trastevere or Prati, bar breakfast, one trattoria, mostly walking, the Colosseum one day and the Vatican on another.
- Lodging
- About €240 a night × 4 = €960. Inside €170–320. At $1 ≈ €0.92, that is about $1,040, before the city fee.
- Food
- About €40 a person × 2 × 4 days = €320. Inside €30–55. Coperto is a few euros more.
- Transit
- About €15 in Metro fares for two across four days if you walk the centro. A 72-hour pass is about €18 a person if you will ride more.
- Tickets
- Colosseum standard at €20 × 2 = €40, plus Vatican online at €25 × 2 = €50.
Day: The Colosseum day is the room (€240) plus food for two (€80) plus a Metro ride (€3) plus two standard tickets (€40): about €365.

- The Leonardo Express from FCO to Termini is about €14 if you land late. A fixed-fare taxi is higher
- An open-jaw with Paris often beats a backtrack. Price the train or the flight as its own line

- A Navona photo menu — Trastevere and Testaccio sell the pasta without the piazza premium.
- Colosseum, Vatican, and a golf-cart — Two tickets and a ride, for one day.

Top money-saving tips
- Hidden gem: Order the cornetto and the coffee at the bar, standing. The seated price on Piazza Navona is a different menu for the same pastry, before dinner even starts.
- Hidden gem: The Colosseum and the Roman Forum share one timed ticket. The Vatican Museums are a second ticket and a second morning. A golf cart sells the walk between them.
- Hidden gem: Borghese Gallery tickets are timed and they go. The park around the gallery does not. A 48-hour metro pass does not get you into either.
- Hotel de Russie breakfast is the Splurge morning. The bar on the walk to the Pantheon is the other one.
- August reprices centro hotels and closes kitchens. The street in front of the Pantheon is still free.
