Where the dollars go
On a big trip, these are the four decisions that move the budget by thousands. The rest is rounding.
Long-haul fares move on a published curve. Inside the sweet spot vs. outside it = $400–$1,400 per ticket.
Europe in October vs. July: same hotel, 30–40% lower flights, half the crowds. Same trip, much smaller bill.
A 60,000-point economy ticket valued honestly at 1.5–2.2¢/pt offsets $900–$1,300 cash. That's a meaningful chunk of one flight, not the whole trip.
The difference between a $220 hotel and a $380 hotel × 10 nights is $1,600. Often the cheaper one has the same view.
Points reality
Influencers often claim points are worth 4–8¢ each. In reality, for the kinds of bookings most people make, points return about 1.2–2.5¢ each. We use the honest range.
Stack honestly: one transferable-points card + normal spending typically covers one third to one half of one long-haul flight. The rest is cash. Plan accordingly.

Questions on the big trip
7 nights for two from the mainland typically lands $5,800–$9,200. Flights $1,800–$3,200 RT, mid-tier hotel $260–420/night, rental car ~$80/day, food and activities $1,400–$2,200. Off-season (April–May, September–October) runs 25–40% below peak.
10 days for two in summer typically lands $7,500–$12,500. Shoulder months (March–April, October) run $5,200–$8,800. Flights are the biggest swing — $1,400–$2,400 RT from the US in summer, $700–$1,200 in shoulder.
Used well, transferable points cover one third to one half of one long-haul flight. The trick is honest value per point — typically 1.5–2.2¢ on economy long-haul, not the 4–8¢ influencers quote on aspirational business class. The Points calculator shows the math for any redemption you're considering.
Domestic shoulder months: 35–60 days out. Domestic summer/holiday: 75–90 days out. Europe / Asia: 90–150 days out. Hawaii: 60–120 days out. The When-to-Book tool maps the published curve for your route.
