How we got these numbers
All-inclusive rates come from Expedia, TripAdvisor, and direct resort pricing for Cancún / Riviera Maya / Punta Cana, May 2026. À-la-carte food, drink, and excursion pricing is the median of Trip.com 2026 cost guides and crowd-sourced spending reports. Kids' AI pricing assumes the typical 40-50% discount most properties offer.
How much does an all-inclusive resort really cost in 2026?
For a family of four at a 4-star all-inclusive in Cancun, Punta Cana, Jamaica, or Riviera Maya, the real 2026 number is $6,400 to $9,200 for a 7-night trip, including flights, transfers, tips, excursions, and a couple of upgrades. The resort's headline rate covers about 70-80% of that — better than cruises or Disney, but still not the whole story. The calculator above breaks every line down.
What "all-inclusive" actually includes
At a mainstream 4-star all-inclusive in 2026, the rate covers your room, all meals at the main buffet and most à-la-carte restaurants, unlimited drinks (usually with brand restrictions), non-motorized water sports, kids' clubs at family resorts, and the entertainment program. What it excludes is more important than what it includes.
What "all-inclusive" leaves out
- Flights: $400-900 per person from most U.S. cities.
- Round-trip airport transfers: $30-80 per person or $80-180 per private van.
- Excursions: $60-180 per person each.
- Premium liquor / wine list upgrades: $15-25 per drink or $60-120 per day for a top-shelf package.
- Spa treatments: $90-250 per service.
- Tips: $80-200 per person for the week. The "all gratuities included" line on most brochures is half-true.
- Wi-Fi upgrades and resort fees: $0-40 per day at some properties.
Average cost of an all-inclusive resort in Cancun (2026)
For a 7-night stay at a mid-tier 4-star all-inclusive in Cancun's Hotel Zone in 2026, expect $2,400-3,800 per couple cruise-only and $3,800-5,400 per couple all-in after flights from a typical U.S. city. A family of four lands at $6,800-9,000 all-in.
Cancun is the cheapest of the four major Caribbean all-inclusive destinations to fly into for most U.S. travelers — direct flights from most major cities run $250-450 round trip in shoulder season. ([Cancun airport flight data](https://www.asur.com.mx/en/airports/cancun.html))
Average cost of an all-inclusive in Punta Cana (2026)
Punta Cana runs 5-15% cheaper than Cancun on the resort rate itself in 2026 — the Dominican Republic competes aggressively on price — but flights are $80-200 more per person from most U.S. cities. A family of four for 7 nights at a mid-tier 4-star: $6,400-8,800 all-in. Bavaro and Uvero Alto are the two main resort zones; Uvero Alto is newer and quieter, Bavaro is closer to the airport and the nightlife.
Average cost of an all-inclusive in Jamaica (2026)
Jamaica trends 10-20% more expensive than Cancun on resort rates in 2026, particularly at family-focused brands like Beaches Negril and Beaches Ocho Rios. Adults-only Sandals properties are pricier still. A family of four for 7 nights: $8,200-12,000 all-in. The premium buys you better beaches in Negril, the Blue Mountains, and Dunn's River Falls within easy excursion range.
Average cost of an all-inclusive in Riviera Maya (2026)
Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen, Akumal, Tulum corridor) sits between Cancun and Jamaica on price. A family of four for 7 nights: $7,200-10,400 all-in. The draw is the cenotes, ruins (Tulum, Chichén Itzá), and the more boutique resort vibe. Transfers are longer — budget 60-90 minutes from Cancun airport — which adds $40-80 per person versus a Hotel Zone stay.
4-star vs. 5-star vs. luxury all-inclusive comparison
| Tier | Examples | Couple, 7 nights, all-in | Family of 4, 7 nights |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5-4 star value | RIU, Iberostar Selection, Hard Rock standard rooms | $3,200-4,400 | $5,800-7,400 |
| 4.5 star mid-tier | Palace Resorts, Secrets, Dreams, Hyatt Ziva | $4,400-6,200 | $7,400-9,800 |
| 5 star premium | Sandals (couples), Beaches (family), Excellence, Grand Velas | $5,800-8,400 | $9,800-14,000 |
| Luxury / club level | Grand Velas Riviera Maya, Maroma, Rosewood Mayakoba | $8,200-14,000+ | $14,000-24,000+ |
Is an all-inclusive actually cheaper than à la carte?
For most family and couples trips of 4-7 nights in the Caribbean or Mexico, the all-inclusive math wins by 15-30% versus paying for the same room, drinks, and food separately at a comparable non-AI resort. It also caps your nightly budget — no $400 dinner surprises. The all-inclusive math loses if:
- You don't drink — you're paying for an unlimited bar you won't use.
- You want to eat in town every night — you're paying twice for dinner.
- You're staying 2-3 nights — the math doesn't have time to compound.
The calculator above runs both scenarios side by side so you can see your real break-even. Or read the full cruise vs. all-inclusive cost comparison.
Palace Resorts, Hard Rock, Sandals: what brand premium is real?
Palace Resorts includes a $1,500 "resort credit" on most promotions — usable on spa, golf, and excursions. The list price looks high, but the credit closes 30-50% of the gap if you'd spend it anyway.
Hard Rock All-Inclusive includes a similar resort credit plus brand-name (Roar-and-Snore) entertainment. Worth a 10-15% premium over comparable resorts if you'll use the credit.
Sandals (couples only) and Beaches (family) include water sports, scuba diving for certified divers, and butler service at top tiers. The premium over a Secrets or Dreams resort is real — 20-40% — and worth it only if you'll dive or want the butler experience.
How to lower the all-inclusive number
- Book 7+ months out. Resort prepay rates are 10-20% below the walk-up.
- Travel in shoulder season. Late April through early June and September through mid-November cut resort rates by 25-35% versus winter and spring break.
- Use Costco Travel, Apple Vacations, or Funjet for the bundle. Their volume discounts beat booking the components separately by $200-700 per couple.
- Skip the "premium" liquor tier upgrade. Most travelers don't notice the difference and it adds $250-500 to the week.
- Book transfers yourself. Booking USA Transfers or Cancun Airport Transportation direct saves 30-50% versus the resort's in-house transfer.
- Pay with a points-earning travel card. An $8,000 all-inclusive easily covers a $5,000 sign-up bonus minimum. See the card finder.
All-inclusive cost FAQ
How much does an all-inclusive resort cost per person, per night?
A 4-star all-inclusive averages $180-280 per person, per night, all-in (including flights, transfers, tips, and one excursion). 5-star premium brands like Secrets, Dreams, and Hyatt Ziva run $260-400 per person, per night.
Is Cancun or Punta Cana cheaper for an all-inclusive?
The resort itself is 5-15% cheaper in Punta Cana in 2026, but flights are $80-200 more per person from most U.S. cities. For most travelers, the all-in totals are within 5% of each other.
Are tips included at an all-inclusive resort?
Mostly yes, but plan on $80-200 per person, per week in cash tips for excellent service from bartenders, waiters, butlers, and housekeeping. Sandals and a few luxury brands genuinely include tips and discourage them.
Is an all-inclusive cheaper than a cruise?
For 7-night trips, an all-inclusive is usually $400-1,200 cheaper per couple than a comparable cruise once you account for cruise gratuities, drink packages, Wi-Fi, and excursions. Cruises win for 4-night and shorter trips. Read the full comparison.
Do kids stay free at all-inclusives?
Many family resorts (Beaches, Hyatt Ziva, Dreams, some Palace properties) offer "kids stay/eat/play free" promotions for children under 12 sharing a room with two adults. Always model both with and without the promotion in the calculator — sometimes a "no-kids-free" resort still wins after the discount.
