Black Friday is November 27, with Cyber Monday on the 30th and Travel Tuesday on December 1, and I’m guessing your inbox already looks like mine. Royal Caribbean, for one, says its savings run straight through all of it. Before you click anything, here’s how I’d tell a real deal from a nice banner.
What the experts say
Jay Wardle, president of the travel-intelligence firm Adara, told TravelPulse last year that airfares and room rates follow demand more than the calendar, so Black Friday isn’t markedly better than other slow stretches. He did say the sales are good at volume, with lots of brands dropping offers at once.
Boutique hotels and small tour operators are the exception. They often discount shoulder-season dates by 20% to 40%, so that’s where I’d look first if you’re flexible on timing.
For flights, Skyscanner’s 2025 data, reported by Euronews on October 28, found that Cyber Monday had the lowest average price per seat across the Black Friday to Travel Tuesday stretch, and that deals could still be found the following day. That’s last year’s pattern, and nobody has published this year’s fares yet, so I wouldn’t treat it as a guarantee.
The test I’d use
Wardle’s rule is simple, and I like it. If the sale price beats what you tracked over the previous 7 to 14 days, it’s real. If it doesn’t, it’s marketing.
Here’s an example, with made-up round numbers to show the idea. Say you’ve watched a hotel at $150 a night. A “30% off” banner on a $210 “regular” rate comes to $147, so you’d save $3 a night compared with the rate you were already seeing, not the $63 the banner implies.
| Rate you tracked for the past two weeks | $150 |
| “Regular” rate on the banner | $210 |
| Banner discount, 30% off $210 | $147 |
| Savings the banner implies ($210 − $147) | $63 |
| Savings versus what you tracked ($150 − $147) | $3 |
If you haven’t been tracking, start today. Write down the price of the hotel, cruise, or tour you want, check it again on Friday, and compare.
Don’t rush the flights
One more thing about timing. Google’s data puts the cheapest Christmas flights about 56 days out, which was October 30 for a December 25 departure. Spring break fares bottom out about 50 days out, which is still a couple of months away (I went through that in my spring break post). So I wouldn’t feel pushed to buy flights this week, and I’d spend my attention on hotels, cruises, and tours.
If a cruise is on your list, remember that Royal Caribbean’s Black Friday savings run from November 27 through December 1 and that wave season follows in January. I covered how to compare those in my Caribbean cruise post.
Set the number before the sale does.
The trip budget planner tells you whether a trip fits, is tight, or goes over, so the discount has to work for your budget, not the other way around.
