London vacation costs: stay, eat, get around (2026)
Contactless fare caps and free national museums make London workable. Mayfair lodging plus the London Eye plus the Tower is a week that looks full and costs about twice as much.
Start here Premier Inn County Hall if you want the river walk, or The Hoxton if you want restaurants on the block. Tesco or a bakery the first morning. The British Museum or the National Gallery before you even look at the Eye.
Who this is for
For
- People who will tap a bank card, hit the daily cap, and sleep in Zone 1–2
- Anyone who wants free museums and one West End seat
Not for
- Anyone who wants a rental car (Congestion Charge on purpose)
- People stacking the Eye and the Tower on Budget
Getting around
Tap contactless on the Tube, the bus, and the Elizabeth line. The Zone 1–2 cap is £8.90 a day and £44.70 Monday–Sunday. The same card on Heathrow Express bills the Express fare, about £26 walk-up, not the Elizabeth line’s £15.50 to Zone 1.
You usually don’t need a car.
Transit-first
- Contactless daily cap on Tube / bus. A Visitor Oyster only if you like souvenirs
- South Bank, Bloomsbury, or South Ken — one neighborhood, no car
- LHR via Elizabeth Line or Piccadilly. LGW and STN are different ground math — price it
Where to stay
Premier Inn or Travelodge in Southwark, King’s Cross, or Earl’s Court. The Hoxton if you want restaurants on the block. Claridge’s or The Connaught if you came to stay in Mayfair.
Budget
- Premier Inn London County Hall South Bank, often about £100–160 a night, taxes usually in the UK quote. The river walk is the product.
- Ibis London Euston St Pancras Zone 1, often about £90–150. A Tesco is downstairs.
- Travelodge London Covent Garden a compact room, often about £100–170, if you packed light.
- Generator London a shared Bloomsbury bed, often well under £80, if that is the brief.
Mid-range
- The Hoxton Shoreditch or another Hoxton, often about £180–280 a night. Restaurants are on the block.
- The Resident Victoria or South Kensington museum mile without a Mayfair rate, often about £170–260.
- Hilton London Bankside often about £180–280. The Tube is in the neighborhood.
- Canopy by Hilton London City Aldgate, often about £170–270.
Splurge
- The Ned you are paying for the room, often £400 and up, and breakfast is still charged separately.
- The Savoy the river, often £600 and up.
- Claridge's or The Connaught Mayfair, often £700 and up.
- Raffles London at The OWO Whitehall, often £600 and up. The British Museum is still free.

Where to eat

- A bakery coffee and a bun often about £5–8.
- Borough Market or Maltby Street lunch often about £10–16.
- A pub pie often about £14–18. Not a West End prix fixe.
Mid-range
- Padella pasta often about £12–16, and the queue is the price.
- Flat Iron a steak often about £15. That is the mid dinner.
- Dishoom often about £25–40 a person. One reservation, not every night.
- A Zone 2 Indian or Turkish dinner often about £15–25 a person, which resets a Mayfair average.
Splurge
- Gymkhana one serious curry, often about £70–100 a person. A different restaurant from Dishoom.
- Core or Kitchen Table a tasting that often runs £150 and up. One night.
- A Mayfair breakfast often £30 and up — for food a bakery sells for £6.

Things to do
The British Museum and the National Gallery are free. Pay for one West End seat or the Tower, not the Eye and the Tower the same day.
Budget

- The National Gallery £0 general admission. Special exhibitions are extra.
- Tate Modern £0 general admission. The South Bank walk between the free museums is £0.

- Borough Market as the lunch, often about £10–16, which is food and not a ticket.
Splurge

- Heathrow Express walk-up about £26. The Elizabeth line to Zone 1 is £15.50. Advance Express can start near £10.
- The Congestion Charge £15 a day if a car enters the central zone.

Top money-saving tips
- Hidden gem: Tapping a contactless card on Heathrow Express bills the Express fare, about £26 walk-up, not the Elizabeth line (about £15.50 to Zone 1) and not the Piccadilly line. Advance Express can start near £10. Check the product before you keep an airport hotel all week.
- Hidden gem: A London Pass looks useful until you count the British Museum, the National Gallery, Tate Modern, and the Natural History Museum as already free. The pass only has a chance if a Tower ticket was going to be paid anyway, and a direct Tower ticket is often less.
- Hidden gem: Contactless capping is the fare, about the price of a few taps, with no card to buy. A Visitor Oyster has a purchase fee. A paper Travelcard is the old product.
- Borough Market is one lunch. Padella or a Tesco meal deal covers the meals that are not a celebration.
- A TKTS or TodayTix day seat is the show. A full-price orchestra seat is the Splurge, and it is not required for the plot.
Next step
Price the London Trip Plan with the contactless cap already assumed. A Heathrow hotel is a landing night. The Eye is optional.
